The Alternative Press Expo (aka APE) takes place on October 17-18 at the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco. We'll be at tables 305-309 joined by creature cobbler Eric Haven, the sensational Lisa Hanawalt, and our Swedish cartoonist friend Emelie Östergren. We're happy to be sharing tables with the folks from Swedish publisher Galago who will be coming out for the show, as well as the Bay Area's own Mats!?.
Kevin Huizenga and Dan Zettwoch deliver more Amazing Facts & Beyond in Fact Parader!, a new batch of the St. Louis crew's strip starring trivia maniac Leon Beyond. It's a mind-melting, fully indexed issue! Grand Hôtel Orbis II is a gorgeous art book published in France that features artists from around the world, such as Blex Bolex, Charles Burns, Frédéric Coché, Daisuke Ichiba, Daniel Johnston, and many more. Geneviève Castrée's haunting and heartbreaking compositions shine on her understated 7 inch E.P. recorded under the name Ô Paon. Find it in the webshop along with other Castrée music projects.

Cartoonist Tim Hensley painted five blank 4"x 4" wooden jigsaw puzzles. Each painting is a slight variation on the above image and is signed and numbered by the artist. They are available here. Three sold, two to go. We'll keep the availability updated as best we can.  Ivan Brunetti's Cartooning, a textbook of philosophy and practice, was previously bundled exclusively as a supplement to issue 9 of Comic Art magazine. Due to popular demand, this valuable classroom tool is now available separately. Designed as a course for the self-taught as well as the classroom student, this 78-page booklet contains 15 lessons complete with exercises and homework assignments. If you are teaching a comics course, inquire directly for information on how to purchase copies for your class. Individuals can still get it free with the purchase of Comic Art 9.  Our girl Lisa Hanawalt's Stay Away From Other People won this year's Ignatz award for "Outstanding Mini Comic" at the recent Small Press Expo. Treat yourself and order one from our webshop. Two pages from Eric Haven's new comic book series The Aviatrix appear in this week's Writers Issue of the San Francisco Bay Guardian. They also interviewed him for an online feature which you can read here.  Matt Furie's in Japan for his show at Beams T Harajuku in Tokyo. It opened October 9th and features 20 new works of art on the "monster family." Will Sweeney DJed at the "Monster Family Party" afterward. Wish we could have been there. Some panels that we're a part of: Saturday, 12:00-1:00pm Jerry Moriarty: Jack Survives Jerry Moriarty is a painter, illustrator and cartoonist who has been teaching at the School of Visual Arts since 1963. Several episodes of his Jack Survives series of comics pages appeared in issues of RAW Magazine. This year, Buenaventura Press has published a definitive hardcover collection of Jack Survives, including never before published work. Publisher Alvin Buenaventura will discuss Jerry's life and work with him in a rare spotlight session. Saturday, 2:30-3:30pm Now Make It Funny Now that comics are finally being taken seriously, a new generation of cartoonists are bringing back the funny. Tucker Stone will talk to Emily Flake (Lulu Eightball), Matt Furie (Boy's Club), Sam Gaskin (Fatal Faux-Pas) and Lisa Hanawalt (I Want You) about comics' historical and ongoing aptitude for humorous effect, the deeper meanings of humor, and the struggles of producing comedy on a deadline. Sunday 3:30-4:30pm The Future of the Comic Book The economics and distribution of the comics specialty market have made the traditional comic book format an endangered species, even as book stores and libraries have become increasingly hospitable to long-form work. Moderator Bill Kartalopoulos will discuss the future of the comic book format with publisher Alvin Buenaventura, cartoonists Kevin Huizenga and Matthew Thurber, who have recently self-published their own serial comic book series, and Hellen Jo and Noah Van Sciver, two emerging artist who have recently launched titles in the embattled format.
