BP SPX'09 Signing Schdule and Panels

Jerry Moriarty, Matt Furie, and Lisa Hanawalt will be with us throughout the weekend celebrating the releases of their new books as well as the following Kramers Ergot 7 contributors.

This will be Jerry Moriarty's second appearance at a show, making this a rare opportunity to meet him and see him talk about his work.

This will also be the first East Coast comics show for Boy's Club creator Matt Furie.

blah, blah, blah...

Some panels that we're a part of:

Saturday, 12:00-1:00pm
Jerry Moriarty:
Jack Survives

Jerry Moriarty is a painter, illustrator and cartoonist who has been teaching at the School of Visual Arts since 1963. Several episodes of his
Jack Survives series of comics pages appeared in issues of RAW Magazine. This year, Buenaventura Press has published a definitive hardcover collection of Jack Survives, including never before published work. Publisher Alvin Buenaventura will discuss Jerry's life and work with him in a rare spotlight session.

Saturday, 2:30-3:30pm
Now Make It Funny

Now that comics are finally being taken seriously, a new generation of cartoonists are bringing back the funny. Tucker Stone will talk to Emily Flake (
Lulu Eightball), Matt Furie (Boy's Club), Sam Gaskin (Fatal Faux-Pas) and Lisa Hanawalt (I Want You) about comics' historical and ongoing aptitude for humorous effect, the deeper meanings of humor, and the struggles of producing comedy on a deadline.

Sunday 3:30-4:30pm
The Future of the Comic Book

The economics and distribution of the comics specialty market have made the traditional comic book format an endangered species, even as book stores and libraries have become increasingly hospitable to long-form work. Moderator Bill Kartalopoulos will discuss the future of the comic book format with publisher Alvin Buenaventura, cartoonists Kevin Huizenga and Matthew Thurber, who have recently self-published their own serial comic book series, and Hellen Jo and Noah Van Sciver, two emerging artist who have recently launched titles in the embattled format.

For a full listing of the weekend's programming go here.

Ignatz Nominations

We're happy to see that a Buenaventura Press project and two BP friends have been nominated for Ignatz awards, the SPX festival prize that recognizes "Outstanding Achievement in Comics and Cartooning."

Exciting New Titles From Buenaventura Press:

Dawn - by Phil Elverum

The music of Mount Eerie and The Microphones has always been a personal, almost voyeuristic, glimpse inside the mind of Phil Elverum. Dawn delves deep into an intensely creative period of Elverum's life with a beautiful mix of journal writing, jokes, drawings, photographs and music. This 144-page hardcover collection chronicles a winter spent alone in a cabin in arctic Norway and comes with a 16-page color photo booklet and a 17-track CD of songs written during that time.

Kramers Ergot 7 - Various Artists
It's finally here!

Kramers Ergot 7 is the most ambitious comics anthology of the past decade. While previous issues of Kramers explored an innovative blend of art and comics, this collection focuses on expanding the boundaries of the narrative comics page. KE7's massive 16 x 21 inch page size has allowed the artists to tell stories at a scope not seen since the expansive Sunday newspaper comics of the early twentieth century. Including over 50 of the world's most esteemed cartoonists, it draws on the talents of established cartoonists, newcomers, elegant stylists, and unpredictable innovators such as Daniel Clowes, Gabrielle Bell, Matt Groening, C.F., Chris Ware, Jaime Hernandez, C. Tyler, Blanquet, Ted May, Adrian Tomine, Johnny Ryan, Kim Deitch, and many others
