Ted May's Injury Comics #1

Injury Comics #1

We're excited to announce Ted May's Injury Comics #1, with Jason Robards and Jeff Wilson. In a post-apocalyptic dystopia, May's misanthropic cyborg Manleau is attacked by the Fighting Cock, a member of the feared Barnyard Animals gang. Can Manleau resist striking a bionic blow against this vicious gang banger as laughing street urchins look on? Also in this hot-rod premier issue: May draws punk artist Jeff Wilson's tender story of his junior-high attempt to score his first joint and listen to some heavy metal - with hilarious consequences! And find out what happens when Hercules gets cloned . . . twice!
File this one under future-cyborg-mayhem-punk-weed-burnout-metal-garage comic/men's issues. 32 pp.

Injury Comics #1 will be solicited in the July '07 Previews for a September release but we'll have some advance copies available next week for MoCCA '07.

MoCCA Art Festival 2007

MoCCA

BP will have two tables at the MoCCA Art Festival on June 23-24, 2007 in the Puck Building, Manhattan, NY. We'll debut the first issue of Ted May's ongoing series Injury Comics, and Ted will be there to celebrate its release. Please stop by to see our just published Elvis Road by Swiss artists Helge Reumann and Xavier Robel. You have to see this amazing book yourself -- no photo can do it justice.

In addition to May, cartoonist and Comic Art designer Jonathan Bennett will join us at the BP booth. And look out at MoCCA for Kramers Ergot contributors Matthew Thurber and Ben Jones, and Private Stash contributor Kim Deitch.

Dan Zettwoch Silkscreen Exhibition

Zettwoch Ruined Pants Postcard

There's an art show currently hanging at the Forest Park Community College Art Annex in St. Louis that features the silkscreens of Dan Zettwoch. The show is called "Ruined Pants" and is chock full of his homemade screenprints, featuring everything from birth announcements to holiday cards, and comic book covers to punk rock flyers.

It opened on June 8th and if you live in St. Louis drop by soon to check it out. The Gallery is at 5435 Highland Park Dr.

Zettwoch wrestler print

For the show he's pulled a new print! It's the first in a new series that memorializes St. Louis folk heroes. (Future subjects include James Eads, Redd Foxx, Mike Shannon and others.) This one is a 3-color tribute to the greatest professional wrestler of all time, Lou Thesz. It's printed with gold, navy blue, and red ink on 24 x 18" double-thickness chipboard in an edition of 75. We hope to get some for the BP shop, so check back soon.

Dan is still hard at work on the first issue of his much anticipated ongoing series Redbird! In the meantime, get your Zettwoch here.

UnInked: Paintings, Sculptures and Graphic Works by Five Cartoonists

UnInked 4 images

Five of the finest cartoonists currently working are also, not surprisingly, five of cartooning's finest artists. While the original ink-on-paper drawings which compose literary graphic novels and comic strips are generally only one step in the arduous process of creating a visual book, they are not necessarily intended to be seen as finished works in and of themselves. This exhibit chooses instead to focus on those artists whose work intentionally already extends beyond the page: rarely-seen drawings, paintings, lithographs, and sculptures which develop the extensive narrative worlds and ideas which every cartoonist has spent years, and in some cases, lifetimes, developing. The prolific artists presented - Kim Deitch, Jerry Moriarty, Gary Panter, Ron Rege, Jr. and Seth - have all devoted themselves to their imaginative work with an multifarious intensity at a time when a great deal of contemporary art mines its so-called visual "source material" from narrative popular culture but then chooses to blur or disregard its story content before enlarging it onto a gallery wall. By contrast, the work by these five artists - for whom storytelling is second nature - is unusually original, direct and full of life.

Panter UnInked

The exhibit runs from April 21st through August 19th, 2007 at the Phoenix Art Musuem, 1625 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona (602 257-1222). A 112 page full-color hardcover catalog edited and designed by the show's curator, Chris Ware, picturing works from the exhibit as well as selected samples of each artists' published work, will be available in mid-July from the museum's store.
